How to identify the brightness of outdoor LED display?

As an important medium for advertising, outdoor LED displays appear frequently in our daily lives. As the demand for repair and identification of outdoor LED displays increases, knowing how to judge their brightness has become an important skill. First, let’s understand what the brightness of an LED display is:

The brightness of the LED light-emitting tube refers to the intensity of the light emitted by the luminous body, expressed by MCD. LED screen luminous brightness is a comprehensive indicator that represents the sum of luminous flux (luminous flux) of all LED modules in a unit volume and the illuminance at a certain distance. Take you 5 minutes to learn about LED display soft modules.

LED display brightness: the luminous intensity per unit area in a given direction. The unit of brightness is cd/m2.

The brightness is directly proportional to the number of LEDs per unit area and the brightness of the LED itself. The brightness of an LED is directly proportional to its driving current, but its lifespan is inversely proportional to the square of its current. Therefore, the driving current cannot be increased excessively to pursue brightness. Under the same dot density, the brightness of the LED display depends on the material, packaging form and size of the LED chip used. The larger the chip, the higher the brightness; conversely, the lower the brightness. Here's what you need to know about nit brightness.

So, what are the methods to identify the brightness of outdoor LED displays?

  1. Homemade simple light metering tool:

Make a 3V DC power supply that is easy to connect to the LED, preferably using a battery. Use two button batteries, put them in a small plastic tube, and lead out two probes as positive and negative outputs. When in use, the positive and negative probes are connected to the positive and negative pins of the light-emitting diode. Press and hold the switch at the end, and the light-emitting tube will light up.

Use a photoresistor and a digital multimeter to form a simple light measuring device. Lead out two thin wires from the photoresistor, connect them directly to the two test leads of the digital multimeter, and set the multimeter to the 20K position. Note that the measured value is actually the resistance of the photoresistor. The brighter the light, the smaller the value.

Take an LED light-emitting diode, light it with the above 3V DC power supply, and place the light-emitting head directly against and close to the photosensitive surface of the connected photoresistor. At this time, the multimeter will display a reading to determine the brightness of the LED.

  1. Brightness identification level:

The brightness discrimination level refers to the brightness level of the image that the human eye can distinguish from the darkest to the whitest. The grayscale levels of LED electronic displays are very high, reaching 256 or even 1024 levels. However, due to the limited sensitivity of the human eye to brightness, these gray levels cannot be fully recognized. The more brightness levels the human eye can resolve, the greater the color potential of the display. Usually, a display screen that can reach level 20 or above is considered a better level. What should I do if the LED display screen cannot load images?

  1. Brightness and viewing angle requirements:

The brightness of the indoor full-color LED display should be above 800cd/m2, and the brightness of the outdoor full-color screen should be above 1500cd/m2 to ensure the normal operation of the display. The brightness is mainly determined by the quality of the LED die. The size of the viewing angle directly affects the number of viewers of the LED display, so the larger the viewing angle, the better. The viewing angle is mainly determined by the packaging method of the die.

It is very important to ensure the brightness of LED electronic displays, especially considering the brightness requirements of LED displays for urban lighting. If the brightness is too high, it may cause trouble to nearby residents. Therefore, when customizing and maintaining LED displays, merchants need to have relevant professional knowledge to avoid adverse reactions.
